Eighteen Year Old Killed by NYPD Officer

As the NYPD is once again under scrutiny over the senseless killing of an eighteen year old in the Bronx, questions are raised as to the excessive force used as of late.  Within the past week we have heard of three other cop shootings and once cop being shot in the back of the head in Brooklyn, but thankfully survived.

This just goes to show that NYPD blue is not only in jeopardy as certain communities no longer have any respect for them, but also that a severe investigation must be underway to insure no other senseless killings occur.  Officers had taken an oath to protect and serve and it doesn’t make things any easier to hire individuals who have not grown up in the communities they serve, because to be quite honest they don’t really know who to keep an eye on, nor how to differentiate the good from the bad. Read more about their latest shooting incident and please let me know your thoughts.

Failing to Govern

Since the economy began to fail many of us have learned the unscrupulous ways to which the mishandling of money has made a huge impact on the middle class.  We have been faced with a huge unemployment rate, foreclosures, and price hikes, and our government simply seems to scare us more and more every year.

As a commuter my monthly expenses to travel back and forth to work is $285.  Every year taxes and rate hikes affect me and my family in a big way and we barely make it to pay every bill that comes with owning your own property.  Receiving transit checks pre-tax assisted me a whole lot as I only had to pay a balance of $55 to obtain my monthly tickets.  Imagine my surprise though when I as well as others received this email the last week of December.

“To Transitchek Participants Outside of the New York City Area,

Many of you received an email from the Transit Center regarding the changes to the $230 transit pre-tax benefit cap. The 2011 tax extension bill of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act expired December 2011 and Congress has not extended this pre-tax benefit for 2012. Thus, as part of the government ordinance, the new monthly transit pre-tax benefit cap has been reduced to $125 and the new monthly parking cap is $240.

As a result, the reduction of the Monthly Pretax Transit Cap may affect staff that has more than $125 Transitchek commuter benefits in the following ways:

  1. Your pre-tax transit benefit was automatically reduced to $125.00 for the month of January due to the expiration of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act…”

Since I  didn’t expect any less from our dear government I sat down and wrote a poem that will only tap into one of the many reasons why this government really blows. Many other reasons will soon follow..

Government Failure

Remember the Reason

Remember the reason for giving- – - When all is said and done, the holiday season is about love, laughter, family and friends. Holidays aren’t about the most number of gifts given, the prettiest wrapping paper, or the most number of cookies consumed. It’s about telling your loved ones that you appreciate them. This appreciation can be in words, writing, or in a small box.

If you don’t have time to purchase everything you absolutely thought you needed or wanted, don’t worry. You can always show your appreciation in other ways. As the holidays approach, many of us face the dread that comes with shopping for those you love and care about as well as planning and sticking to a healthy eating routine.  Holidays are one of the most challenging times of the year, but staying practical and patient with yourself can help you stay on track.  Don’t be too hard on yourself if you lose sight of your balanced healthy lifestyle, cause if you get off track one day you can always get back on track the next.

Happy Holiday Season to all, stay blessed and always be merry.

Sincerely yours,

Susan B. Anna 2011

Stand for Freedom March & Outcome

Thousands gathered and marched through the streets of New York City on December 10 – International Human Rights Day – to stand for freedom and call for an end to right- wing voter-suppression efforts. The demonstration was a joint effort of the NAACP and 1199SEIU and was endorsed and supported by a large coalition of other labor and community groups.

The day began with a picket at the Madison Ave. offices of right-wing energy billionaires the Koch Brothers, who are major funders of voter suppression efforts throughout the nation. The efforts mostly affect communities of color, immigrants, the elderly, young people and the poor – all of which tend to vote for Democratic candidates. Some efforts currently being employed to keep these people out of the voting booth are: the passage of new stringent regulations requiring government-issued identification, denying anyone with a felony on their criminal record the right to vote, redistricting which favors conservative and right-wing candidates, and the elimination of early and Sunday voting.

“We know where our civil rights came from and they’re trying to take them away from us,” said Beverley Murdaugh, a rehab CNA at Townhouse Extended Care in Uniondale, NY. “We are doing this for our children and for the lives that have been lost to win our rights, because we know they can be taken away just like that.”

After picketing, the thousands wended their way through Manhattan’s East Side to the United Nations’ Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza for a Stand For Freedom rally. Marchers chanted “We Are The 99%” and “This Is What Democracy Looks Like.” They carried signs bearing the images of civil rights martyrs, including Medgar Evers and the four little girls killed in a Birmingham, AL church bombing in 1963.

At the rally, speakers included elected officials, clergy, community organizers and labor leaders. All of them pledged to fight the forces that would curb any American’s hard-won right to vote.

“We are here to stand up to those who would take our sacred right away and that is the right to vote,” said 1199SEIU President George Gresham. “If we have to raise our voices we will raise our voices. Too many good people have died to give us the right to vote.”

Enid Dobson-Grant, a secretary at Nephro Care in Brooklyn, felt that it was so important to be at the march that she too took the day off to be there. “It seems that they want to take us back and make us not have a vote,” she said. “Whoever is not voting needs to register, needs to stand up and be part of this. Otherwise we’re going to go right back and not have our say.”

NAACP President Ben Jealous praised the crowd for bearing up to the chilly December weather. He told a story of a group of elderly women in Missouri denied the right to vote because the county courthouse in their home town had burned down and they couldn’t secure their birth certificates.

We will not forfeit our right to vote,” said Jealous. “When the worst part of the 1% conspires against the 99% we will not sit by passively.”

Stand for Freedom & Voters Rights

Imagine if everyone in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Boston, Baltimore and Miami suddenly lost their ability to vote.

That’s the number of people — 5 million and counting — affected by passed and pending changes to voting laws in states around the country. When all is said and done, millions more could be disenfranchised.

Voting rights are under attack.  New requirements to produce state identification in order to vote and efforts to curtail or end early voting are a direct assault on our strength at the ballot box.  The people trying to pass these laws lie.  Backed by the billionaire Koch brothers, they say that it’s about voter fraud.  What it’s really about is systematically suppressing voters of color, students and the elderly as we enter the all-important 2012 election year.

We can fight back. Join us on December 10th in New York City, as we march from the office of the Koch brothers to a rally at the United Nations Building.

What: Stand For Freedom March on the United Nations
When: December 10th, 11:00 AM
Where: Start at the office of the Koch Brothers on Madison Ave. and E. 61st St., and march to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza

We are partnering in this action with the NAACP and are joined by the AFL-CIO and dozens of unions, civil rights and civil liberties organizations, churches, and community groups. Please mark December 10th on your calendar today.

Then take these quick and easy steps to learn more:Then take these quick and easy steps to learn more:

Text the word STAND to 62227 on your mobile phone to take a simple quiz: Learn the truth about who is affected by voter ID laws.
Like Stand for Freedom on Facebook: Join the discussion on new voter ID laws across the country, and learn how you can get involved in our efforts to ensure everyone has the right to vote.

If we are going to push back against these new laws, we need to separate the truths from the myths — and the facts do not lie:

·         You have a better chance of being struck by lightning than you do of being impersonated at the polls.

·         11 percent of eligible voters would not have the proper, up-to-date, state-issued ID required to vote.

·          African American, Latino, young, elderly and disabled voters are far more likely to lack the required identification to vote.

Please join us on December 10th at the UN. This is our first step toward winning the 2012 elections. All we have won and hold dear is at stake.

Occupy Wall Street Follow-Up

In less than three months, the Occupy Wall Street movement, with its “99 Percent” formulation, has changed the national political conversation from “deficits” to issues facing working people—jobs, income disparity, corporate control of the political process, “banks get bailed out, we get sold out.” Big banks were forced to drop their attempt to charge consumers for debit card transactions. The Congressional “super committee” failed in its attempt to gut Social Security and Medicare. In Ohio and New Hampshire, attempts to eliminate collective bargaining for public workers were defeated. In New York, taxes on the wealthy will go up while those on the middle class will go down. Many political commentators credit the Occupy movement…  What are your thoughts?

THE ONION AND THE CHRISTMAS TREE

The family is sitting at the dinner table. The son asks his father,
“Dad, how many kinds of boobies are there?” The father, surprised,
answers, “Well son, there’s three kinds of breasts. In her twenties,
a woman’s breasts are like melons, round & firm. In her thirties &
forties, they are like pears, still nice, but hanging a bit. After
fifty, they are like onions.” “Onions?” “Yes, you see them, and they
make you cry.”

This infuriated his wife and daughter so the daughter says, “Mom,
how many types of “willies” are there?” The mother, surprised,
smiles and answers, “Well dear, a man goes through three phases. In
his twenties, his willie is like an oak tree, mighty and hard. In
his thirties & forties, it’s like a birch tree, flexible but
reliable. After his fifties, it is like a Christmas tree.”  “A
Christmas tree??”

“Yes dear, dead from the root up and the balls are for decoration
only.”

Support vs. Envy

To be supportive of another person by providing sympathy and encouragement is not something that comes by lightly to some.  It is truly a pity that many think supporting another can be a disadvantage to them and even more of a pity when said reason is due to envy or possibly resentment.

To have such discontent to another individuals advantages, success and or possessions is such an ugly thing, and even more so when one claims to be of religious faith, but somehow allows the hate and envy to still set in.

As a person who simply enjoys seeing others shine and achieve success I find this lack of support from individuals I am close to unbearable.  I can’t seem to understand how one can want another to not obtain the success they worked so hard to earn.  Success in life does not come easy, it takes perseverance, dedication, long days; late nights and a lot of stress to get there so why not be as supportive as possible.

Therefore, to everyone needing a boost of support I’d like to say.  Great work, congratulations and keep your head up as you continue on the road to success.  Remember to thank those who have been there and lent a helping hand and always stay as humble as possible.
